are the course catalog descriptions for each of the general Chemistry courses
offered at LSU. You can also check current enrollment figures for each
course.

| CHEM 1001
- Chemical Fundamentals
3 credit hours. Prereq.: ACT mathematics score of
at least 21 or eligibility for MATH 1021. For those students whose curricula
require only one year of chemistry or physical science. Also may be taken as a
preparatory course for CHEM 1201.
An overview of chemical theory and principles with emphasis on the role of chemistry in the modern world.
CHEM 1002 - Chemistry of Life and the Environment 3 credit hours. Prereq: CHEM 1001 or 1201 or 1421. Credit will not be given for both this course and CHEM 1202 or 1422. Continuation of CHEM 1001; organic chemistry and biochemistry; polymers, pollution, and pharmaceuticals.
CHEM 1201 - General Chemistry (Lecture I) 3 credit hours. Prereq: ACT mathematics score of at least 23 or eligibility for MATH 1020/1021 or a more advanced math course. Credit will not be given for both this course and CHEM 1001 or 1421. For science/engineering curricula. Modern chemical theory and principles; quantitative approach and problem solving; descriptive chemistry of selected elements and compounds.
CHEM 1202 - General Chemistry (Lecture II) 3 credit hours. Prereq: CHEM 1201 or 1421. Credit will not be given for both this course and CHEM 1002 or 1422. For science/engineering curricula. Continuation of CHEM 1201; additional theory with emphasis on solution chemistry and a quantitative approach; descriptive chemistry of selected elements and compounds from the main groups and first transition series.
CHEM 1212 - General Chemistry Laboratory 2credit hours. Prereq: credit or registration in CHEM 1002, 1202 or 1422. 6 hours of laboratory. Credit will not be given for both this course and CHEM 1431. Breakage Deposit. Basic laboratory operations including selected experiments and introductory inorganic qualitative analysis.
CHEM 1421 - HONORS: General Chemistry (Lecture I) 3 credit hours. Prereq: ACT mathematics score of at least 27 or eligibility for MATH 1550. Credit will not be given for both this course and CHEM 1001 or 1201. Chemistry majors who qualify should take this course. For well-prepared students with a special interest in chemistry. Modern chemical theory and principles; descriptive chemistry of selected elements and compounds; the role of chemistry in the modern world.
CHEM 1422 - HONORS: General Chemistry (Lecture II) 3 credit hours. Prereq: CHEM 1421 or 1201 with consent of department chair. Credit will not be given for both this course and CHEM 1002 or 1202. Chemistry majors who qualify should take this course. For well-prepared students with a special interest in chemistry. Continuation of CHEM 1421; Modern chemical theory and principles; descriptive chemistry of selected elements and compounds; the role of chemistry in the modern world.
CHEM 1431 - HONORS: General Chemistry Laboratory 2 credit hours. Prereq: credit or registration in CHEM 1422, or credit or registration in CHEM 1202. 6 hours of laboratory/demonstration. Credit will not be given for both this course and CHEM 1212. For chemistry majors and other well-prepared students with special interest in chemistry. Breakage Deposit. Fundamental chemical operations, selected experiments, and elementary
quantitative techniques.
